Periodontal / Gum Dentistry
Gum disease is a serious condition that can lead to significant discomfort, bleeding, and tooth loss. Left untreated, it can also increase your risk of heart disease and other conditions.
If you notice gum irritation, redness, or increased dental sensitivity, you should schedule a dental appointment as soon as possible. Other symptoms of periodontitis include:
- Significant discomfort
- Inflamed gums
- Moderate to severe bleeding
- Loose teeth
- Gum recession
- Bad breath
PERIODONTAL TREATMENTS include the following:
Non-Surgical Treatments :
Scaling and root planing is a careful cleaning of the root surfaces to remove plaque and calculus [tartar] from deep periodontal pockets and to smooth the tooth root to remove bacterial toxins. Scaling and root planing is sometimes followed by adjunctive therapy such as local delivery antimicrobials, systemic antibiotics etc.
After scaling and root planing, many patients do not require any further active treatment. However, the majority of patients will require ongoing maintenance therapy to sustain health.
Gum Graft Surgeries :
Exposed tooth roots are the result of gum recession. Gum graft surgery will repair the defect and help to prevent additional recession and bone loss.
During gum graft surgery, your periodontist takes gum tissue from your palate or another donor source to cover the exposed root. This can be done for one tooth or several teeth to even your gum line and reduce sensitivity.
Periodontal care is important for your oral and overall physical health. Without treatment, you could suffer significant tooth loss and gum recession.
It is especially important that expectant mothers seek periodontal care to avoid preterm delivery and low birth weight. With our comprehensive care, we can protect your gums, smile, and systemic well being.
